This week I had to put on my superwoman cape and rescue my husband who was stranded on the 2nd floor roof of our house.  Now, you should know I don’t climb ladders and I hate heights!  My husband, Alan, who does climb ladders and doesn’t seem to be afraid of heights, since he painted houses years ago, had set up two ladders to retrieve the two limbs on our upper roof.  The first ladder took him to the flat roof on the porch, and the second rested on the porch roof so he could reach the limbs on the upper roof.  I think that when he got there the limbs were just out of reach and, without thinking he climbed on the roof to get to them and then the way he had the ladder positioned, much like in the picture above, he was unable to get on the ladder without the possibility of it falling out from under him.  I was in the house but, all of a sudden I had a bad feeling, a Holy Spirit whisper, that something was wrong so I went outside to see his dilemma.  I asked him if he needed help and he said that he thought so.  I looked around and there didn’t seem to be any one available in the neighborhood, and short of calling the fire department to get my husband off the roof (rather than a cat out of the tree) I figured the help had to come from me!  I went into the house for better shoes and began to pray, “Lord, I need your help.  You know that I am afraid of climbing ladders.  I am scared.  And you know that my hip has been hurting for a couple of weeks and I am having trouble leaning on it to climb stairs.  I can’t climb this ladder without your help but your word says that ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,’ ( Phil. 4:13) so Lord please empower me to do this.”  I went back outside and grabbed the ladder sides, took a deep breath, and trusted that the Lord had heard my prayer.  As I took the first step on the ladder I felt the strength of God go through me and I climbed the ladder, then held the ladder for Alan, and then climbed down with no problem.  I will admit that after it was all over I could feel a trembling inside, but while I did it trusting in my Lord to help me I felt strong and my hip didn’t even hurt!  So, when life hands you something you think that you can’t handle remember the Lord is willing to empower you to be victorious over whatever trial is set before you because we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!
