We had a scare years ago when my daughter came home from school with a note from the school’s physician. He was concerned that she might have scoliosis or curvature of the spine. We were told to make an appointment with the Shriner’s Hospital in Erie to check it out. When we met with the doctor there he pulled out a weight on a string (a plumb line) and had Debra stand as straight as she could while he compared the plumb line to her back. Thankfully her back lined up with the plumb line.
This was my one and only experience with a plumb line, but it was a memorable one. My understanding is that masons and carpenters use plumb lines as more reliable than eyesight to check the straightness of the walls they build. If the wall is leaning it will not be a reliable and stable part of the building.
