Part I: Receiving God’s Love

God's LoveThe Lord has had me on a different journey over the last year. It started with learning about some spiritual disciplines practiced by Christians in the past as well as the present. One of those was walking a labyrinth. I found a labyrinth about 30 miles from my house so I asked a friend to go with me and see if we could practice this spiritual discipline. It was a good experience, but, I have found that public worship experiences don’t always touch my introvert heart. One day in prayer I felt the Lord impress me to walk the labyrinth with Him. As I was sitting in my chair and it was raining outside and the labyrinth was 30 miles away, I started walking the labyrinth in my mind and this experience has blessed me in so many ways. One of the most important ways is that I have finally begun to learn to receive God’s love. As I was thinking about sharing this experience with you, I have struggled with how to explain how to do this in your own home. What I have learned this past year, what I am about to tell you, all Christians know in their mind, but most have not been able to receive the fullness of it in their hearts. I am still learning how to receive God’s love as I am not a good receiver from anyone. I am a great giver, but I am embarrassed to receive, as I don’t feel worthy of that much attention, and then I am always looking for a way to repay someone for their gift of kindness. Those same things make it difficult for me to receive the love of God. There are so many barriers that God has to break through for me to receive His love from Him but let me encourage you, He is able and I am becoming a better receiver of His love each day. Bible reading, devotion, intimacy, know God, mentor, persevere

dinnerJanuary finds us all ready for starting over, doing life better, and, of course, losing weight. Now that we are reaching the end of January many of our plans have met the pavement of reality and most of us have begun to slack off on the plans we have made. It is easy to get disappointed with the lack of progress in the short, cold, and snowy days. The enemy of our souls would like to keep us discouraged and have us tuck our tail between our legs and say, “I’ve tried and tried, but I have never succeeded in reading the Bible in a year.” The truth is, it is harder for some of us to climb this mountain than others, but thankfully I don’t remember a Bible verse that says you have to read the Bible in a certain length of time to be a Christian. I do know of verses that tell us that the word is a lamp unto our feet, a light for our path. (Ps. 119:105) That tells me that, if we want to know where we are heading, and, if we want to be in God’s will, we will need to know what He says in His word. Perseverance is important to running the race for God. Sometimes we just want to give up as the race seems too hard. Discouragement is one of the enemy’s best weapons. That’s why I think it is important to have an accountability partner or a group of friends studying the Bible together. It helps encourage us to get through those rough times when the task seems overwhelming.

When thinking about the challenge of Bible reading and study I started thinking about Jesus and food. There are not a lot of verses in the gospels that talk about Jesus snacking. I remember once his disciples were in the grain field, and once when he went for figs and there were none on the tree, but what I do remember is that Jesus spent a lot of time eating a full meal with those he wanted to talk with. Could that be saying that if we want Continue reading →

lapI want so much to leave an inheritance to my children and my grandchildren but I’m afraid they won’t get rich in dollars and cents when I die. Hopefully they will have a richness of memories of the love I had for them. In Proverbs the Bible talks of leaving an inheritance:

“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.” (Proverbs 13:22 ESV*)

The Amplified Bible enlarges the idea of inheritance to “a moral stability and goodness.” Although I did not inherit much in the way of material possessions from my grandparents I did inherit “moral stability and goodness.”

My grandmothers were the most influential of my grandparents. I had 3 grandmothers Continue reading →

enjoyFor the last month or so I have been thinking about what it means to “rejoice in the Lord always,” and in this process I was reminded that the Lord rejoices over me. (Zeph. 3:17) During this time my husband and I were asked to babysit for our two granddaughters while my son and his wife attended their denominational conference. Because they were traveling to California and the kids were still in school they asked us to take care of the kids’ during the school week. They asked their other grandparents to take the next shift until the parents got home so no set of grandparents would be overwhelmed and the kids would get to enjoy both sets of grandparents. God used this time to speak to me about “enjoying God.” Continue reading →
