In America we use the word love for all kinds of love. I love ice cream, I love my cat, I love movies, I love my husband, I love my kids, I love God. But God calls us to the highest form of love, the sacrificial kind, the kind that Abraham was called to when he was asked to sacrifice his son for God.
Years ago I heard a minister define love the way God showed love in the scriptures. That definition changed the way I try to live out love in my everyday life.
Pastor George Zimmerman defines godly love as:
“Love is a premeditated, deliberate, cold-blooded decision and commitment to treat someone else in such a way as is in their best interests, regardless of how you feel about them at the moment.
Love is an issue of commitment, not passion or feelings.
Love is that potential of God in me that allows me to go against me and do what is best for you.”
That is what Jesus did in the Garden after He prayed 3 times and His Father still asked Him to go to the cross for you and for me. Continue reading
